Porcupine Hills PLUZ

Porcupine Hills (PLUZ) public land use zone  (49.806092, -113.950773)

Porcupine Hills Public Land Use Zone covers an area of 392 km² and is located about 130 kms south of Calgary, Alberta.  

How to Get There – The area has several access points and depending on season and weather some roads may be better than others.   One way to access the area is from the South through Fort Macleod by heading West on 3, then North on 2, Then west on 785, Then North on Range Road 285a, then an immediate left turn onto township road 91B, This road changes names several times but continue straight until reaching the area.

Trails – Trails here accommodate both ATV, side by sides and dirt bikes and offer everything from challenging forest single track and leisure logging roads to hill climbs and stunning views Porcupine hills has a little of everything. 

Camping – camping here is “random camping “which means all camping in the area is user maintained and is not serviced.  (backcountry camping)  many nice camp sites can be found around the area.

Facilities –  No facilities of any kind, no washrooms, no garbage cans, no shops,  so plan accordingly.

Mclean Creek Off Highway Vehicle PLUZ

Mclean Creek Off-higway Vehicle PLUZ covers an area of about 202 km² and is located about 60 km west of Calgary

How to get there – We recommend accessing the area from the north through Mclean creek campgrounds though access is also available from the south through Fisher creek.  Mclean Creek Campgrounds are located on Mclean creek trail, just off higway 66.   If Travelling from Calgary head West on Trans-Canada highway, then south on highway 22, then West on Higway 66, then turn onto Mclean Creek Trail.

Trails – Trails here accommodate all types of vehicles; ATV, side by side, Dirt bikes.  Trails range if difficulty throughout the area including some more challenging areas.  

Camping – The Best Camping in the area is Mclean Creek Campground.   Campsites located in Loop “C” and Loop “D” are designated for visitors with off road vehicles.  While staying in these campsites the trail system is accessed directly from the back of your campsite which makes it very convenient and adds to the enjoyment of the whole place.  Mclean Creek Campground has several out-house style washrooms and drinking water scattered around the campground.  However they also have pay showers and a store with many basic items.    Backcountry Camping or “Random camping” is also allowed within the the trail system however a permit is required which can be purchased online.
